Riding my bike to work

Nothing makes me feel more like a kid than riding my bike in the early morning sunshine, breeze blowing through my hair, books in the front basket rattling as I go over bumps.

Nothing makes me feel less like a kid than climbing the stairs to the office, red-faced and winded, legs a little shakey from the ride.

It was a long, sedentary winter.

Your post made me laugh. I was trying to reconnect with my childhood this weekend, enjoying the beautiful weather, huffing and puffing and pedaling! I find I am too chicken to do that thing where you stand up and pedal and throw all your weight into picking up speed. I feel like I am going to tip over! Can you do that? Drew has decreed that I have to ride every day from now til the France trip so I won't be holding everyone back... One day I am 12 and the next I am 42--no, that's not quite it. It feels more like I am a chubby out of shape 12 year old! At least before I could go up hills and go "no-hands" and lots of other fearless feats!

I *can* stand up and pedal to pick up speed, but with my backpack (including laptop) on my back I do get a little nervous about it. Maybe we should find some spot to ride together, two out-of-shape 12-year-olds...

I hopped on a swing Saturday afternoon when I was at the park with my boys. It was really inspiring. I was eight years old again, and I felt as free as a bird!
