Mothering at Mid-Career: Getting Over It

When I saw the piece on "the other 'F' word" in this week's Chronicle, I have to admit it took me a while before I felt like reading it. Really? I thought, are we still talking about families and the academy? Aren't we done yet?

Hmmm. I think it works like this.

Situation 1.

Female on tenure track: "Can we schedule that meeting at 3, rather than 4? I want to leave by 4 to get to my kid's soccer game."

Academy authority: GRUMBLE. She's got her priorities all screwed up.

Situation 2.

Male on tenure track: "Can we schedule that meeting at 3, rather than 4? I want to leave by 4 to get to my kid's soccer game."

Academy authority: "SURE!" What a good parent!

There's certainly something to that, CS, though less and less so where I work, thankfully. I really think the issue right now for us is more that situation #1 might be a staff person where situation #2 is faculty.
