Girl Athletes and Women Professors

There's quite a discussion of the New York Times piece on girl athletes in the comments over at 11D. I think it's fair to say Laura didn't much like it. But it had me thinking about myself and my colleagues--when does difference become inferiority? When does equality become an unsustainable sameness?
